Letter of intention
My name is Morten Lund. I’m 25 years old and currently attending the media-school in Viborg, where I’m taught a various array of media software. This is a new way for me to explore and be creative, but traditional medias like pencils and ink isn’t. As far as I can remember I have always loved to draw, inspired by cartoons and videogames, but real life as well together with my father. I clearly remember him sitting and drawing by the kitchen table, while I was trying to copy his approach and style. When I wasn’t drawing I spent an insane amount of time climbing and building caves in trees. My father even built a Tarzan land for me and my brother, made of trees connected with robes. Thanks to that, I really immersed myself in the role as Tarzan and Spiderman. These memories are some of the best in my life! As I got older and entered high school, I became really fascinated by production of movies, games, and cartoons. In my spare time I spend hours searching the Internet for production information on movies like Jurassic Park. What fascinated me about this movie was the fact mankind had reached a state of technology that made it possible to recreate dinosaurs, and the way Steven Spielberg depicted it through the story. I’m a big fan of organic environments combined with a twist of technology, so watching it was a perfect visual experience.
I’m also a fan of the Half Life series. This game has a unique and original story, but what made me love this story is the mysterious way it’s being told. Playing it is like walking through a tense mist without being able to see what’s in front of you. Scary yet extremely exciting. The environments in Half Life 2 are also beautiful made with all its organic designs combined with technology. It just doesn’t get any better!
Together with drawing this remained a hobby for me, a way to escape daily frustrations such as the big question “what should I do with my life?”
After considering architecture, industrial design, and for a short period studying sport, I stumbled upon a brochure about The Animation Workshop. When I read it I realised I had found a way to combine all my interests. I attended an open house in the summer of 2010, and I was sold – I had finally found my spot. At the same time I visited The Drawing Academy, and after talking with some students of TAW and TDA I realised I knew very little about drawing. In order to improve my skills I decided to take a semester at TDA from January 2011 and while applying for TAW. Taking this semester is the best thing that ever happened to me; I learned way more than I expected about classical drawing and how to implement it in your freestyle work. I equally enjoyed the intense and creative atmosphere at TAW; I was surrounded with creative and passionate people like myself. As time passed and I got a better insight in the daily life at TAW through my new friends, who just made me more excited about the education.
Because I realised how fundamental and important classical drawing would become for me in my future work as an artist, I decided to take another semester at TDA from August 2011. During the first semester I decided that the CGA-line was what I wanted to strive for, since I’m also very interested in backgrounds and colours, which I really started to pay attention to through my latest hobby – photography. I have used some of my pictures as an inspiration to my portfolio.
My dream is to become a concept artist or 3D character artist and work for companies that has inspired me like Valve Software (Half Life series), DreamWorks (Kung Fu Panda 2) and Pixar (Tory Story 3). These companies have produced content that has inspired my deeply, and I think they truly define what originality, passion, and hard work means. This is what I want to be a part of in the future.
I look forward to hear from you
Yours sincerely
Morten Lund
